The findings come as part of IRI's (IRI) 2012 Canadian Retail Sector Report, which found that retail sales in Canada are the best in recent years, even though sales growth is expected to slow during 2012. The report also states that both convenience and mass merchants continue to do well in Canada. Convenience store sales grew by 2.3 per cent in 2011, the best growth in the history of the sector. In 2011, almost seven million consumers visited a Canadian convenience store each day. The average transaction size in 2011 was $5.87 per visit. The largest increase in convenience store visits came in Ontario where visits jumped 3.9 per cent in 2011 compared to 2010. The largest product mix change came in Alberta where convenience store visits grew by 6.7 per cent in 2011.
